Pregnancy Care Tips for New Moms-to-Be

October 07, 2026

Pregnancy can turn an ordinary day into a series of new questions.

Is this symptom normal? Am I eating enough of the right things? How much should I exercise? Which medicines are safe? When should I call my doctor?

There is no single pregnancy experience. But one thing remains important throughout: staying connected with your healthcare team and paying attention to your changing body.

Make antenatal appointments a priority

Regular antenatal visits allow your healthcare provider to monitor your health and your baby's development.

Depending on your stage of pregnancy and individual needs, your doctor may monitor blood pressure, weight, baby's growth, blood tests, nutritional requirements and other pregnancy-related concerns.

Keep track of your appointments and follow the schedule recommended by your healthcare provider.

Eat for nourishment, not for two

Pregnancy increases the need for certain nutrients, but it doesn't mean doubling your food intake.

Focus on a varied diet that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, dairy or suitable alternatives and healthy sources of protein.

Important nutrients can include folate/folic acid, iron, calcium, iodine, vitamin D and protein. Your doctor may recommend supplements depending on your individual needs.

Stay hydrated

Water is generally the best way to stay hydrated during pregnancy.

Regular fluid intake supports normal body functions and may also help with common concerns such as constipation.

If you're experiencing persistent vomiting or cannot keep fluids down, speak to your healthcare provider.

Keep moving—when it's safe for you

For many healthy pregnancies, moderate physical activity can support overall well-being.

Walking, pregnancy-safe yoga, swimming and gentle stretching may be suitable options.

But pregnancy isn't the time to follow someone else's workout routine blindly. Your doctor can guide you on the type and intensity of activity that's appropriate for your pregnancy, particularly if you have a complication or have been advised to restrict activity.

Rest is part of pregnancy care

Feeling more tired than usual is common during pregnancy.

A regular sleep routine, comfortable sleeping environment and short rest breaks can help. As your pregnancy progresses, pillows can also provide additional support.

Rest isn't something you need to feel guilty about. Your body is going through significant changes.

Be careful with medicines and supplements

Don't start, stop or change medicines, supplements or herbal products without discussing them with your doctor.

Tell your healthcare provider about everything you take, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements.

Pay attention to mental well-being

Pregnancy can bring excitement, anxiety, uncertainty and changing moods.

Stay connected with people you trust. Gentle walks, breathing exercises, music or simply talking about your concerns can help.

If you feel persistently sad, anxious, overwhelmed or unable to cope, speak with your healthcare provider. Mental health is an important part of pregnancy care.

Know when to seek medical help

Some symptoms during pregnancy require prompt medical attention.

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience concerning symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or vision changes, difficulty breathing, chest pain, leaking of fluid, fever, severe or persistent vomiting or noticeably reduced baby movement later in pregnancy.

For emergencies, seek immediate medical care.

Pregnancy care is about informed choices, not perfection

You don't need to have a perfect pregnancy routine. What matters is staying informed, following professional advice and giving yourself the care and rest you need.

As part of its wellness offering, HDFC Life provides benefits designed to support preventive and timely healthcare. Depending on the plan, customers can access pregnancy care benefits.

Because caring for yourself is an important part of caring for the journey ahead.

Every pregnancy is different. Let your healthcare provider's advice guide yours.
